Books for Soldiers

During the first Gulf War, several of my friends from school were in the reserves and were activated to fight the Iraqis. CNN reported that once the soldiers were deployed, they were faced with massive downtime and were restricted to their base due to the travel limitations set by the Saudi government.

I am a voracious reader and at the beginning of the Gulf War, I had a closet full of paperback books. Books that were not being used. So instead of selling them at the used book store, I packed them up in small care packages and sent them out to all the soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen I had addresses for.

Within a few weeks, I ran out of books before I ran out of addresses. Friends and family members began donating their paperback books and in the end, over 1000 books were sent to the Gulf.

After the war, we received many thank-you notes from soldiers who got one of our books. Unless it was time for them to fly back home, mail-call days were one of the most anticipated events of deployment. Regardless of why the military is deployed, the men and women of our armed services are there for us. They deserve our support and if we can make their deployment easier, then all the better.

Action: Remember the Soldiers of Wars Past

Our Heroes are everywhere. They pass by us at the market. They work for us. They walk our streets.I am talking about the men and women of our Armed Forces who have served our country ably, courageously and many times anonymously. We all know one such individual. They served. They don't talk much about it, except with hesitation and humility. And they believe that their unbelievably difficult sacrifices have been forgotten.

And they live across from us. One such Hero is Adolph Arujo who served in the Korean war as a medic in the 2nd Infantry Division in the Punchbowl. This area had some of the fiercest fighting of the war such as Heartbreak Ridge.

We have never spoken in detail about the War nor will we. Courtesy of Hollywood movies, I can imagine the devastation of a friend's horrible death at your side. I can imagine the onslaught of an attack and gut-bending fear that does not deter one from duty. I can imagine the alienation between a soldier and civilian life. But, of course, I'm still just imagining and not living this role. My words are wholly insufficient. Their valor, courage and service is far too incomprehensible in my experience.

USS Stockdale and Some Words on the Economy

Last Saturday morning, I had the privilege of attending the official commissioning ceremony of the USS Stockdale, a new destroyer named after deceased Admiral Jim Stockdale, a Vietnam War hero and POW that endured torture because of his refusal to capitulate to his captors. This article is going to be relatively short, but I want to say a few words about the pageantry and patriotism of the men and women serving in our Armed Forces, in this case, specifically the navy.

The entire ceremony was full of deep seated navy tradition. The men and women making up the crew of the Stockdale showed extreme patriotism and made me proud to be an American. These young men and women will do anything; even give their lives for love of country. And, they do it under the scrutiny of the liberal media and liberal extremists that basically do not even want the military to exist.

I must say that during the centuries old ceremony, I was almost brought to tears a few times. This is especially true when I think of the speeches given in honor of Admiral Stockdale. This is a man that was a Vietnam POW that endured 7 ½ years of torture because he would not do anything against the flag. Much of that time was spent in solitary confinement at the Hanoi Hilton where he was being held prisoner along with Senator John McCain. Stockdale was promised on multiple occasions that if he agreed to renounce the flag and/or make statements against the interests of the United States, his captivity would be more comfortable. He refused for the full time of his confinement. As such, he was physically and mentally abused continually. Listening to Ross Perot describe Stockdale’s humanity and patriotism almost brought tears to my eyes.
